The institute consists of three departments:

1. Religion and Culture (Head: Dr. Stephan Schaede)
2. Peace and Sustainable Development (Head: Prof. Dr. Hans Diefenbacher)
3. Theology and Natural Science (Head: PD Dr. Gerald Hartung).

In addition to this, the institute's researchers continue to work in cross-section projects which engage resources from more than one department.
